FAR FROM OUR CORAL HOME

By Josie Whitehead

Far From Our Coral Home

In quiet warm waters, safe in their home,

Swim the fish of the coral reef.

Hidden from predators, warmed by the sun,

It’s a heaven beyond all belief.

This is their home on Planet Earth

Where they eat, they sleep and give birth.

Pure azure blue is the sea of these reefs,

Rocked by the tides and the waves.

Here’s where the fish of this watery world

Feel secure in their colourful caves.

This is their home on Planet Earth

Where they eat, they sleep and give birth.

Then humans arrived at their rainforest sea:

'We’ll take these bright fish,' they all said.

A fishing net trawled their place in our world,

And the terrified fish quickly fled.

But: This is our home on Planet Earth

Where we eat, we sleep and give birth.

Hiding quietly within their coral bright home,

They all sensed the danger around,

But then divers arrived intent on a catch

And the lovely fish quickly were found.

But: This is our home on Planet Earth

Where we eat, we sleep and give birth.

'Money’s our object,' the divers all said:

'So what do we care about you?' -

As they carried the fish of the coral reef

Far, far from the home that they knew.

So they left their home on Planet Earth

Where they’d eaten, slept and given birth.

Humans killed them, ate them or put them in tanks.

So, what could these little fish do?

Then they pocketed money and put it in banks

Far, far from their heaven of blue.
