IN THE BASKET

By Josie Whitehead

In the Basket

In the basket, net the ball -
The end of a long season’s haul.
     Running, throwing, jumping, cheers:
We’ve shown our skill to all our peers.

They’ve seen our stamina and strength
To work the course both breadth and length.
     We’ve demonstrated power and skill,
Both outer self and inner will.

But as that ball heads through the net
You’d think we’d finished, but we’ve yet
To hold the cup within our hands:
That’s been our goal, you’ll understand.
