MAN'S INHUMANITY TO MAN

By Josie Whitehead

Man's Inhumanity to Man

A thick white cloud across the sky,
Our land it seems to span -
And yet it covers not the deeds
     That man bestows on man.

Below, some upward branches stretch
    Black fingers to the sky,
But human hate between mankind
    They simply can’t deny.

They throw their shadows in the lake
     Which quiver in the breeze.
It seems to them that warring man
    Nothing can appease.

Our lives upon this earth are short
And yet we cry for war.
What causes these bad wars to start?
The same thing, I am sure:

Imposing rules that make no sense;
    Constraint, repression, fear.
They’re not ingredients of love
     Of that I’m very clear.

The years roll in, the years roll out,
    But does it not s
eem strange,
That though this world evolves and grows,
     We humans never change?
