THE SOUNDS OF LIFE

The whir of the lawn mower, the patter of feet;
The roar of the traffic which comes down the street.
The swishing of washing inside the machine,
As it rumbles and grumbles to make our clothes clean.
The clattering of dishes and the buzzing of bees;
The rustling of wind as it blows through the trees.
The jingle of money and the ring of the till
And from out in the road comes the roar of a drill.
The crackling of flames when the bonfire is lit
And the clicking of needles when I start to knit.
The soft burbling sound of a stream running by,
Or the sizzling of sausages starting to fry.

The tick of the clock and the rattle of chains,
And up overhead there's the drone of a plane.
The pealing of church bells and the chirp of a bird:
Yes, all of these sounds have been given a word.
