WALKING ON
 THE CEILING

By Josie Whitehead

I’m surely not the only one

     Who sits and wonders why

The ceiling can be walked upon

By a spider or a fly?

Do they have little suction pads

    That hold them very tight?

Now if I tried walking upside down -

Well then you’d have a fright.

I’m sure it wouldn’t work for me,

And it wouldn’t work for you,

So put it right out of your mind.

     Don’t even think of glue.

The insects don’t use suction pads,

     And never try to cheat.

They’ve all got microscopic hairs

     Upon their little feet.

Our surfaces are smooth to us,

     But rough to insects’ toes.

So that’s how they walk upside-down,

     Well that’s what I suppose.
